John Titus Obituary

John Dwayne Titus

 “Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6

“The Journey”

            John Dwayne Titus entered this life on January 6, 1956 in the Borough of Manhattan, New York City, New York. He was the third of seven children born to Richard and Dorothy Elaine Potter Titus. He was predeceased by his mother and his sister, Dorothy Susan Titus Russell.

            John was educated in the New York City public schools and graduated from the Music and Arts High School in 1974. He furthered his education by attending the York College (New York) and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting in 1980. In 1977, while John was still in college, he began as a part-timer, a long career at Emigrant Savings Bank. After 41 years, John retired from Emigrant in 2018 as Vice President, Checking Department.

            In addition to a thriving and successful career at Emigrant, John also found the love of his life at the savings bank. The best withdrawal he made from the bank was when he took a second look at the Sistah in the Accounting Department, Claudette Ann-Marie Blackett. After a brief two-year courtship, John and Claudette were married on June 23, 1990. They moved to New Jersey in 1992, where they joined the North Stelton A.M.E. Church in Piscataway.

            At North Stelton, under the pastorate of the Reverend Dr. Kenneth L. Saunders, Sr., John and Claudette quickly became intimate and integral members of the Church Family. In 1995, John was appointed to the leadership position of Steward. John faithfully worked with the Pastor, the Board and the congregation taking the lead on matters of finance and budget; and on or about 2013, he was appointed Vice Chair of the Steward Board.

            John was an essential member of the Men’s Fellowship; and an indispensable member of the Inspirational Male Chorus and the Messengers for Christ Choir as the congregation was often blessed to hear his melodious tenor voice singing the songs of Zion, which he loved. John and Claudette served as Co-Chairs of the Marriage Fellowship, and as Pre-Marital Counselors for the Ulti-Mate Ministry under the leadership of Reginald and Gwendolyn Dorsey. John was an effective and inspirational Church School teacher, and instrumental in the spiritual growth of the youth and teens at the Church. In addition, John was appointed by Pastor Saunders to be the Lay Director of the New Brunswick Theological Seminary Supervised Ministry Program at North Stelton.

            John traveled the last mile of his journey and departed this life on Saturday, February 2, 2019. With the love of his life by his bedside, John made his earthly transition from the church victorious to the church triumphant at 1:15 in the afternoon.

            He leaves to cherish his memories his wife Claudette, and his father Richard Titus (Sara). His children Alan Titus (fiancé Cindy Guzman) and Alyssa Knox (Keith). Grandchildren Kylie and Lucy Knox. His siblings Richard Titus (Renee), Robert Titus (Angelle), Karen Williams, Donna Johnson, and Robin Titus. Nephews Quentin Titus, Jason Williams (Rhovi), and Justin Williams. Nieces Symia Titus and Janae Goyco (Jaime); and a host of other relatives and friends including his church family.
