Joyce A. Patterson, 89, was called home peacefully by our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Father’s Day (Sunday, June 16, 2019). Joyce was born on April 24, 1930 in Long Branch, NJ to the late Walter A. Brown, Sr. and Gwendolyn V. Brown.
Joyce was educated in the Fair Haven and Rumson school systems. From kindergarten to grade eight, she attended Fisk Street School (presently the Fair Haven Police Station), a one-room school house for African American students. In 1950, Joyce graduated from Rumson High School. After graduating, Joyce worked at Leon’s Dry Cleaners in Red Bank, NJ for 5 years. She then moved onto work for the Post Exchange on Fort Monmouth, NJ, as a Supervisor until her retirement.
Joyce was truly a child of God and loved the Lord. She was a dedicated and faithful member of Fisk Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church her entire life. Joyce served as a Trustee, was a member of the Pastor’s Aide, and a revered member of the Gospel Choir, where she served as President for many years. Joyce really loved to sing. Whenever she got up to sing, you could easily see and hear the love that she had for God come through.
Joyce was such a fun-loving person, with a great sense of humor. She loved to travel, laugh, joke, and cook. She was especially known for the famous rolls and salads that she would to make for church and family events. Above all, Joyce will be remembered for her genuine spirit and extremely kind, giving heart. She was always there to help her family and friends; giving advice, lending positive and encouraging support, and always sending up prayers. Joyce was loved and admired by so many people.
