Lanuel Ferguson Obituary

Lanuel Joseph Ferguson, affectionately known as Lanny, unexpectedly and quietly departed this world to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 7, 2019.  Lanny was born on September 12, 1951 in Newark, New Jersey to the late Dewey Ferguson Sr. and Mattie Westbrook-Ferguson. 

Lanuel graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark, New Jersey in 1969. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Delaware State University in 1973.  While attending Delaware State University, Lanuel was a 3 year football starter. Lanuel was a football star and in 2015 Lanuel was inducted into Delaware State University Football Hall of Fame.  In addition to loving football, Lanny loved race cars.

Lanuel began a career as an Educator before beginning his Career as a New Jersey State Trooper. He  graduated with the 93rd A Class of 1978. Lanny pursued a long and satisfying career in law enforcement. Within his 28 years of service Lanuel was promoted to the rank of Major.  In January 2006 he retired as Major of Troop C. from the New Jersey State Police. After retiring Lanuel became The Director of Security at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, in Somerset, New Jersey, while also being employed with Princeton University, in Princeton, New Jersey as one of their Security Officers. He continued his employment with First Baptist Church  and Princeton University until his unexpected passing. Lanuel was involved in many endeavors all of which he loved and enjoyed. He was a true man of his craft. To know Lanuel was to love him.

Lanuel was predeceased by his parents, four brothers Elrese Bennett, James Westbrook, Robert Johnson and Dewey Ferguson Junior. Also one granddaughter Cynth’Yana Geneva Brown.

Lanuel leaves to cherish his loving memories, his devoted wife Cynthia Ferguson of Princeton Junction, New Jersey, two children Nicole Brown-Vincent (Marshall) of Voorhees, New Jersey and Jamal Ferguson of Washington, DC. Five grandchildren, Horatio Lanuel Nunn, Nya and Brandon Drayton, Shah’wy and Sakim Ferguson. His best friend (like a brother) Larry Williams (Sandra) of Tampa, FL. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a host relatives and friends.
