Richard Sims Sr. Obituary

Richard Sims Sr., 87, son of the late Lindsey and Annie Sims of Red Bank, New Jersey transitioned from this life January 13, 2020 at home.  He fought an amazing fight; and maintained his faith until he completed his journey.

Born on February 12, 1932, at 217 River Street in his parent’s home.  He was the 6th child of a proud and distinguished family of ten.  He was educated in Red Bank Public Schools.  Known for his sense of humor, yet he maintained a serious demeanor in his everyday walk with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

At an early age, under the spiritual guidance of his parents, he assisted his father in pioneering the St. Paul Baptist Mission in 1947, which later became St. Paul Baptist Church.  Richard remained a dedicated servant of the Lord throughout his life.

Richard began his work career as a military man.  He served in the Army after being drafted for the Korean War.  Richard’s tough demeanor led him to being selected to box for the Army.  He was a man of strength and honor.  Richard served his country faithfully in the United States Army.

Richard worked for Red Bank Borough for 33 years and retired as a supervisor.  He loved everything about Red Bank.  Richard was the “neighborhood watch” of Bank Street, he was loved and respected by the people in his community.  In his leisure time Richard enjoyed spending time with his great grandson Christian, tending to his beautiful garden, and going to Monmouth Park Racetrack.

In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his siblings Lindsey Sims Jr., Mattie Octavie Sims, Arnold Sims, Stella Johnson, Davis Sims, Junius Sims, and George Sims.  He leaves to honor his memory, his sister Elizabeth Sims, brother Arthur Sims, son Richard Sims Jr., all from Red Bank, New Jersey.  His grandchildren Tonya S. Sims, Janis D. Sims, Latieria Sims, Lyquana H. Sims, Samantha Barden, and Lisa Barden, and a host of great grandchildren.  The Sims family would like to extend a special thanks to Doreen “Dodi” Good, for caring for Richard until the very end.
