Alwin Haywood Obituary

Alwin Martin Haywood was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on March 28th 1954 to the late Willie Haywood Sr. and Dorothy Redick Haywood. “Al” or “Marty”, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was the fifth of seven children born to Willie and Dorothy.

Al grew up in a family with an array of personalities and achievements which provided him a strong foundation. Al was a member of the 1972 graduating class at Franklin High School in Somerset, NJ. While attending, he was a member of both the Varsity Wrestling and Football teams and excelled at both. Upon graduation from high school, he briefly attended Southern Illinois University and then returned home where he began his career at Johnson & Johnson’s World Headquarters in New Brunswick, NJ. Al was a proud Rutgers alumni completing his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University and graduated from Rutgers Law School in Newark N.J. During his time at Rutgers, he was inducted in the Pi Sigma Alpha (Beta Omicron Chapter) – National Political Science Honor Society (1985). He subsequently went on to be admitted to the New Jersey Bar Association in 1989 and American Bar Association in 1990.

Al had a long career within the Law Dept of Johnson & Johnson. He retired from his position of Law Library Coordinator in March 2022. Al was especially proud of his 47 years of service at J & J and often shared many stories about his buddies and their sports escapades.

Whether you know him as Al, Marty or Uncle Marty, you know that he was a strident, ardent and active follower of his beloved New York teams-Yankees, Knicks and Rangers. He has been described to the family by his J & J friends as soft spoken, intelligent and crazy knowledgeable about sports. His family and childhood friends would describe him as the “loudest person in the room” when sports are on in the house!” Truly, nobody was louder than Marty! Upon his retirement, he was surprised with a video tribute to him by none other than the NY Yankee Dave Winfield. Marty was shocked, surprised and overjoyed. He shared the video with family and friends. He was so proud and flashed his signature smile for weeks. Every week he was invited by friends and co-workers out to honor him and celebrate his retirement. His dance card was truly full.

While sports were a prominent part of his life, it was not the only thing. Al loved music, especially Jazz and New York theatre. He loved attending live events. Marty led a full and active life until his health began to fail. He always had a smile and easy way about him and will be remembered by all who knew him.

Whether you remember him as soft spoken, spirited, kind, having a big smile, or as a sports aficionado, his memory will endure. He joins his parents, brothers Willie Haywood Jr., Charlie Haywood and nephew Darrell Stenson in his heavenly home. God knows they are surely boisterous and having a grand time. To God be the Glory!

Marty leaves to cherish his memory his sister Sandra Redick (Tampa, FL), brothers David Haywood (Tampa, FL), Dexter Haywood (Deborah) of Somerset, NJ, Tyrone Haywood (Nadine) of Charlotte, NC, Cresta Haywood, sister-in-law of Plainfield, NJ, cousin Freddie McCray (Hazel) of Atlanta, GA. Nieces and nephews Keisha Haywood-Musombo (Cheriff), Dennis Payton, Jazminne Haywood, Danielle Haywood McGee (Dwight), Eric Haywood, Kay (Charlene) Knibbs, Marcus Haywood, Jade Haywood, Tahirah Haywood, Yaasmeen Haywood and Aliyah Haywood. Great nephews Brendan and Niall; great nieces Cameran, Logan & Malia, Jordan Daniels of North Brunswick, NJ who was like a son to him and a host of many other family members, friends and former colleagues.
