Artis Carpenter Jr. Obituary

Artis Carpenter, Jr. born September 20, 1939, in Badin, North Carolina, to the late Artis Carpenter, Sr. and Willie Mae (Anderson) Carpenter (Jackson). He was the loving husband of the late Sylvia (Johnson) Carpenter.  He departed this life on December 8, 2022, at JFK Medical Center, Edison, New Jersey.

At a young age, the family moved to High Point, North Carolina where Artis attended elementary school. After the family moved to Morristown, NJ, Artis enlisted in the Army Reserve.  Upon leaving the military, he was employed at Chatham Golf Club and the Poultry Store in Morristown, hence earning him the nickname “Birdmann.”  In 1960, Artis married the late Sundra (Brenda)Greenwood (Pulliam) and from that union Sheri Carpenter was born.  In 1969, he was employed by University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) as the personal driver of the President of UMDNJ for 30 years and retired in 1999.  Artis was married to the late Sylvia Johnson on June 12, 1970, and celebrated 40 years of marriage with two children, Pamela and Carl Carpenter.  They enjoyed cross country trips to California, North Carolina, and Florida to visit family. He was a former member of New Hope Baptist Church, Newark, NJ where Artis was ordained and served as a Deacon.  After his retirement, he relocated to Edison, NJ.

Artis enjoyed gospel music, especially Reverend Luther Barnes. He enjoyed watching sports, especially his Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Baltimore Ravens.  Artis was an excellent bowler and coached his son Carl and other youth. For many years, he collected comic books and model cars.  After retirement, he played cards with his neighbors, fished, and watched old movies.

Artis was quiet, soft spoken, kindhearted, and generous.  He never complained in his sickness and never gave up his faith in God through all health issues. He loved his family, who will surely miss him.

Artis leaves to mourn and cherish his memory three children, Sheri Carpenter, Edison, NJ; Pamela Jackson (David), Bloomfield, NJ; Carl Carpenter (Zoe), Camden, NJ; and his grandchildren, Charles Jackson, Angel Carpenter, Jaiden Carpenter and Zinnia Carpenter. Also mourning are his siblings, Dorothy Elbeck; Ronald Jackson; Timothy Jackson; Clarence Ware; Barry Jackson (Maya); Stanley Jackson; Patricia Ewers (Rev. Garth); Warren Jackson (Darlene); Sheila Jackson; Darnell Jackson; along with numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. He is predeceased by Carl Jackson, his youngest brother.
