Augustus Smith Jr. Obituary

Augustus (Gus) Smith Jr. was born January 2, 1944, to the late Augustus Smith Sr. and Macion Lee Smith in Somerville, NJ.  Augustus was 78 years old when he transitioned from earth to glory on May 31, 2022.  Gus was known to his Family and Friends as (Zoop, Zoopy and/or Junnie), to his Children as (Dad or Cool), to his Grandchildren as (Poppy or Grandpa).

Gus married Catheran Jones on October 17, 1960 and from this union they were blessed with 4 beautiful children.  Gus being a new husband and father still managed to work and graduate from Somerville High School in 1962; where he was able to display his athletic skills in several sports.

Gus working career consisted of employment by Johns Manville, PSE&G, Washington National Insurance Company, Part-time Special Police Officer, and Zeus Industrial Products where he retired in 2009.

Gus loved the Lord as he was baptized at St. Paul Baptist Church in May of 1977 by Rev. James E. Sherman Sr.  This love flowed over into the community where he volunteered his services as a Baseball Coach and Pop Warner Football Coach where he also served on the Board.  He was also a co-founder for New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church in Somerville, NJ under the leadership of Rev. James E. Sherman Sr.

Everyone who knew Gus, knew he loved working on cars, especially his 1969 Blue SS Camaro which he held onto until 2010.  He enjoyed sewing taught by his mother, reading, scrapbooking which consisted of community athletes and events, photography, bowling, tennis and playing pool, just to name a few.

Gus is predeceased by his Mother Macion Lee Smith(Herbert(Pop-Pop) Jackson; Father Augustus Smith Sr.(Elma); sister Macion Kristina Young; brother Carter J. Smith; grandson Malcolm Jamal Smith and nephew Scott Hampton; Left to cherish his memory and legacy is his two sons, Augustus Smith III(Margarie), Monroe, NJ; Curtis Smith, Raritan, NJ; two daughters, Sheila Smith, Hillsborough, NJ; Alicia Smith, Langhorne, PA; a sister, Diane V. Smith(Greg) Somerset, NJ; step-siblings, Jessie McDaniel Somerset, NJ; Joyce Dileo(Richard), FL; a brother-in-law, Pastor Charles E. Young, Monroe, NJ; 13 grand-children, 16 great-grandchildren; former spouse Catheran Smith and a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
