Bessie Gladys Blocker

Deacon Emeritus Bessie Gladys Blocker was born January 23, 1931, to the late Fannie Twyman and John Moses Coleman in Franklin Park, New Jersey.  She departed this life on Thursday, September 11, 2025.  She attended public school in Franklin Township.  

She was united in holy matrimony to her soul mate and love of her life, Deacon Emeritus Willie Blocker, Sr. on December 20, 1947.  This union was blessed with six children.  Deacon Blocker preceded her in death on August 23, 1999.

She was affectionately known as Mommy, Ma, Mom, Granny, Nan, Nanny, Aunt Woogie, Mom Blocker (to many at FBCLG) and Gladys, which she originally used as her first name for over 50 years.

At an early age Bessie professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens where she was a dedicated member.  She was a member of Sr. Choir #1, Jubilee Chorus, Robert Rawls Chorale Ensemble, CH Browns Gospel Chorus, Emergency Choir and Voices of Praise, the Kitchen Committee and Deaconess Board.  Her favorite scriptures were Psalm 23 and 27, and her favorite song was “Jesus Be a Fence All Around Me”.  She was a member of the FBC Senior Club, Franklin Township Senior Citizen Club, Franklin Park Senior Citizen Club and the Citizen Club of Franklin Township.  

Bessie was employed at Union Carbide, Johnson & Johnson, Franklin Township Public Schools, Ryder Bus, Co., SCAP, Home Child Care and Companion to Disabled Seniors.  Her hobbies were caring for children and arts and crafts. Her words of wisdom were “always put God first in whatever you do because with Him in your plan, you cannot go wrong – whatever you do will come out right”.

Bessie was preceded in death by her sons: Willie Jr., Alan, Eric and Daniel; 7 sisters:  Marie Jackson, Mildred Small, Margaret Foat, Doris Coleman, Annie Thompson, Ruthie Coleman and most recently, Alyce Thomas.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her daughters: Linda Williams (Charles) and Tracy Dozier (Robin); 2 Goddaughters, Shirley Spruill and Aspen Newton;  one Godson/nephew, Kevin Coleman (Linda);  21 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

NEVER SAID GOODBYE

You gave no one a last farewell, or ever said goodbye.

You were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why.

A million times we will miss you, a million times we will cry.

In our hearts you hold a place no one else can ever fill.

It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone.

For part of us went with you, the day God took you home.

Loved beyond words, missed beyond measure

Always and forever in our hearts.

A Life Well Lived

A life well lived is a precious gift of hope and strength and grace,
from someone who has made our world a brighter, better place.

It’s filled with moments sweet and sad with smiles and sometimes tears,
with friendships formed, good times shared and laughter through the years.

A life well lived is a legacy of joy and pride and pleasure,
A living, lasting memory our grateful hearts will treasure.
