Brian Coit Obituary

Brian Timothy Coit, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away on September 22, 2025, at the age of 52. Born on December 10, 1972, in Plainfield, New Jersey, Brian was raised in Somerville, where he formed lifelong friendships and deep community ties.

He attended and graduated from the Somerville public schools, where he excelled both academically and athletically. A natural leader, he proudly served as quarterback of the Somerville High School football team and also played baseball, earning the respect of teammates and coaches alike. He went on to attend North Carolina Central University, further shaping his perspective and commitment to building a meaningful life for himself and those around him.

Throughout his life, Brian worked in various fields before finding his professional home with the International Longshoremen’s Association, Local 1233, in August of 2014. He remained a dedicated and respected member of the ILA until his passing. No matter the job, Brian’s top priority was always to provide for his family—a commitment he fulfilled with unwavering determination and love.

Brian and Tanisha shared a rare and enduring bond that began in childhood. From elementary school through college, they grew up side by side, forming a friendship that would later become the foundation of a beautiful life together. Though life took them in different directions for a time, fate reunited them on a train ride in late 2010—a chance meeting that rekindled their connection and changed everything.

Not long after, they moved to Somerset to build a life together, and on November 5, 2011, they were married in a celebration of love and second chances. In March 2012, they welcomed their first son, followed by a second in December 2015. These two boys joined Brian’s two beautiful daughters, completing a loving and lively family that brought him immense pride and joy.

Brian’s life was deeply enriched by the love he shared with Tanisha and their children. His journey was one of reconnection, devotion, and unwavering commitment to those he loved most.

He will be remembered not only for his hard work but also for the heart he shared with his community. Known for his long talks, sound advice, and open-door attitude, Brian was a pillar of support to many. Whether you needed a listening ear, a good laugh, or someone to stand by your side, Brian was there—often putting the needs of others before his own.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Tanisha Coit; his loving parents, Frank E. Coit and Alma J. Coit; his brother Eric S. Coit (Sokhna Sene); and his cherished children, Nia Coit, Savannah Coit, Chase Coit, and Colin Coit. He also leaves behind his nephew, Eric Sene Coit; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins; and a multitude of loving friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Brian’s legacy is one of strength, loyalty, and love. He lived fully, gave freely, and left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

“To know Brian was to be cared for. To be his friend was to have a brother. And to be part of his family was to be loved unconditionally.”
