Charles Thomas Hawkins, Sr. of Somerset, NJ, affectionately known as “Hawk” and” Bayboy” passed away on June 11, 2024. He was born in Weldon, North Carolina on August 28, 1939, to the late Harriet Hawkins Rice and George Lee Hawkins. The Hawkins family relocated to Manville, NJ 1945.
During his time in the Manville school system, Charles was an avid athlete who excelled in both basketball and baseball. As he grew older, he discovered a deep passion for golfing and bowling, with bowling becoming a particular favorite that brought him numerous trophies and accolades.
Charles dedicated over 20 years of his life working at Jersey Aluminum and later retired from Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) after 30 years of loyal service. Following his retirement, he took on a part-time position at Quail Brook Golf Course in Somerset, NJ.
Above all, Charles cherished his family. His love and dedication to his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and siblings was unwavering, and he took great pride in their accomplishments and happiness. He was known for his kind heart, infectious smile, and the unwavering support he offered to those around him. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Charles was preceded in death by his son, Charles Hawkins Jr. (Bobo); parents, Harriet Hawkins Rice and George Lee Hawkins; and his siblings, Gwendolyn Jackson, Emily Garrison, Curtis Hawkins, George Hawkins, and James Hawkins.
Charles leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of over 60 years, Evelyn of Somerset, NJ; three children, Michele Hawkins Nunn, LaFaye Dais, and James Hawkins all of Somerset; a brother, Gregory (Felicia) Hawkins of New Brunswick, NJ; nine grandchildren, LaTisha Nunn, Taj (Felicia) Hawkins, Sean(Shonique) Nunn, Natavia Hawkins, Jerryl Nunn, Jr., Jada Dais, Ryan Hawkins, Amanni and Elijah Hawkins; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Charles will be remembered for his witty humor, loving nature, and the countless lives he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of love, family, and cherished memories.
