Darlene Kornegay went to her eternal rest on December 31, 2020 at the age of 73. Darlene was born February 12, 1947, the second of four children to George M and Edith (Jackson) West in New York City. In 1969 she graduated from Hunter College with a BS in Nursing and later received her master’s degree in Health Education from Lehman College. Darlene worked at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx and retired in 2010 after 41 years in their healthcare system.
In 1983 Darlene married William F Kornegay and from this union was born their only child, Daniel Sean Kornegay. Darlene had a passion for caring for others and expressed that through her service as a recovery room nurse, patient care coordinator, clinical instructor and home care coordinator among other positions. She was always available to offer a helping hand to others. She understood the importance of a supportive, nurturing environment for young people. She worked as head nurse at a juvenile detention center. She provided a safe and stable home for foster children in her care. As a CASA volunteer she advocated for other foster children in court.
Darlene was a faithful member of the Mid State Black Nurses Association, the Riverside Club, and the Sister2Sister Network. Darlene was a 2x cancer survivor but did not allow her life to be defined by that struggle. She remained very active, was an avid walker and enjoyed dancing, yoga and healthy bones classes. She had an impressive travel itinerary, having taken several cruises and visited many of the islands in the Caribbean. Darlene was a very committed member of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens. She was involved with the hospitality ministry, the dance ministry and weekly bible classes. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents George and Edith and her brothers George Jr and Keith. She is survived by son Daniel, sister Diana (Lloyd) Thompson and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and a wide circle of friends.
