Ellen Perkins Obituary

During the Second World War, army soldier James Cox was stationed in Italy when he received the news that he became a father. His wife, Meralda E. Cox gave birth to a healthy baby girl they named Ellen. Ellen Merald “Judy” Cox was born in Long Branch, New Jersey on January 17th, 1945. She received the moniker “Judy” from her maternal grandmother, the late Adeline O’Neal. She grew up in Middletown Township, New Jersey with aspirations of becoming a teacher. She graduated high school in 1963. After her parents’ divorce, Ellen put her college plans on hold to help support her mother and younger brother Kevin. Over the course of her young adult life she was employed by establishments such as PNC Bank and Bendix Corporation. It was during this time that she began dating patrolman Robert J. Perkins of the Middletown Township Police Department. Robert was beginning his ministry at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Tinton Falls, New Jersey under the pastorate of Ellen’s maternal grandfather, the late Rev. Jordan O’Neal. They were wed on June 26th, 1971. Soon after, Ellen settled into life as a homemaker. Rev. Robert Perkins became pastor of Emmanuel after the passing of Rev. O’Neal. As first lady of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Ellen sang in its choirs and was a soloist. She also taught children’s bible classes. She loved teaching children and was passionate about encouraging them to read. She taught her two daughters Jennifer and Melissa to read. Ellen was a fixture at her children’s back to school nights, parent-teacher conferences, and attended PTA meetings. While her children attended elementary school, Ellen was employed as a school aide by the Middletown Township school system. In addition to teaching, Ellen enjoyed the vocal stylings of Johnny Mathis, her doll collection, which was increased generously by her husband and children, and cooking. Her potato salad and baked ziti were among her family’s favorite dishes. After a lifetime of service to others, Ellen transitioned from time to eternity on December 8th, 2023. She is predeceased by her parents, stepmother Ethel Cox, and her husband, the Rev. Robert Perkins. She is survived by her daughters Jennifer and Melissa Perkins, grandson Jayden Robert Ross, brothers Kevin, Tony, David, and Henry Cox, sisters Carol, Beryl, and Christina Cox, aunt Elizabeth Himmel, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, the Emmanuel Baptist Church family, and friends.
