Eva Moore Obituary

Eva was born Eva May Guilford on September 8th, 1936, in Abbeville, Alabama to Joseph Guilford and Ethel Underwood Guilford.

She moved to Newark, New Jersey at the age of 9 where she attended Newark public Schools until 9th grade.

She met her future husband, William Moore, when they were friends and neighbors as children. They married on June 5th, 1953.

In 1962, Eva and William purchased their first home on Renner Avenue in Newark, NJ where they raised their 5 children – William Jr., Phyllis, Donna, Nevia and Trill.

Eva worked most of her life as a Nurse’s Aide. She worked at Clara Maass Hospital and Saddlebrook Hospital. Eva was also an entrepreneur – owner of Moore’s Luncheonette in Newark, NJ for many years.

In the early 80’s Eva and William reached their goal of owning a one family house. They moved to Manalapan, NJ. There, Eva worked at Riverview Medical Center and then at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital, where she eventually retired. She spent many years as a member of Christ Temple Freewill Baptist Church in Newark under the leadership of Pastor Willie Tolbert Sr., where she accepted Jesus Christ as savior.

Eva had a passion for learning and caring for others. As an adult she went back to school to earn her G.E.D., then went on to pursue her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She lovingly cared for her ailing mother and father until their passings.

In the early 2000’s, Eva and her husband William retired to their cherished home in Manalapan, NJ where Eva enjoyed tending her roses, spending time with her grandchildren, and attending Community Refuge Church, where she continued to worship her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She would ardently read Psalm 119 in its entirety daily. She also took great pride in being an Ombudsman for AARP, where she worked as an advocate for older people who had complaints regarding their care.

As a show of her continued caring nature, she cared for her husband of 52 years as he battled lung cancer. She cared for him until his untimely death in 2005.

Eva moved to South Jersey in 2009, where she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She spent her remaining years living and being cared for by each of her children.

Eva’s Earthly journey here ended on January 11th, 2022. She was preceded in death by her mother Ethel Guilford (1984), her brother Johnny Lee Guilford (1987), her father Joseph Guilford (2003), her husband William Moore Sr. (2005), and her son William Moore Jr. (2021).

Left to mourn are her children: Phyllis Scott and her husband Vernie, Donna Clay and her husband Carl, Nevia Herndon and her husband Forest, and Trill Newsome and her husband Ray.

Her grandchildren: Meltice and his wife Kerri, Vondell and his wife India, Tyronn, Lorin and her husband John, Shanee, Jordan and Michelle.

Her great-grandchildren:  Meltice Jr., Jae Simone, Xavier, Cameron, Imani, Te’a, Isaiah, Vondell Jr., Princeton, John III (J3), and RaJohn.
