Gary L. Majette was born in Conway, North Carolina on August 28, 1965, and moved with his parents to New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1968. The family resided at 176 Memorial Parkway until they purchased their home on Commercial Avenue, the uptown section of New Brunswick.
Gary attended school in the New Brunswick School System and forged a special, lifelong bond, with one of his teachers, Mrs. Helen Daniels. Gary was an incredibly skilled man thanks to his experience at the Vo-Tech School in East Brunswick, from where he graduated. There, he learned a number of trades such as dry cleaning, building maintenance, and mechanics.
Following graduation, Gary was mentored by his elder family members, Poon and Jimmy L. Edwards, in the field of logistics and trucking. Having thrived at Rutgers Express Trucking, Gary moved on to work at Gund, Inc. where he oversaw the logistics department for over 20 years until retiring in 2008.
One of the things Gary cherished the most after his retirement was helping his children transition into adulthood and assisting them as they navigated parenthood. When he wasn’t busy with his family, Gary could be found on Pine Street enjoying the breeze, maintaining his pristine car, and socializing. Anyone who knew Gary would agree; he could always be called upon to lend a helping hand, whether it was a ride to the pharmacy or grocery store, helping one of his children move or watching one of his 15 grandchildren, Gary was a reliable and generous with his time and spirit.
On January 31, 2023, Gary departed this life for eternal rest. His big heart and generous spirit will be greatly missed by all.
Gary was predeceased by his mother, Chrissy Mae Long; his father, William L. Majette; and his
sister, Brenda F. Majette.
He is survived by his four children, Makisha (Gary) Southerland, Gary Williams, Shakinda McLendon, and Jocqua (Tara) McLendon; 15 grandchildren: Daysha, Tyree, Lisa, Zionana, Makayla, Destiny, Jashone, Jordan, Aamir, Sarie, Ayden, Zion, Ashanti, Jeremiah, and Jocqua Jr.; two brothers, Michael and Lawrence Majette; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
