Gladys Mae Mills

 

Gladys Mae Mills, 81, departed this life on February 18, 2022, surrounded by family in her hometown of Somerville, New Jersey. Born in Leesburg, Georgia on August 1, 1940, Gladys was raised in Albany, Georgia by her paternal grandmother. In 1960, Gladys moved to Somerville, NJ and made it her permanent home.

 

Gladys was predeceased by her parents Leona Tukes and Stoman Brantley; husband John Mills Sr. and Stepfather Booker Tukes Sr.; brothers Emmanuel “Buddy” Brantley, Charles Brantley, Jeremiah Brantley, Albert Terrell, Stoman Brantley III, Henry Tukes and Booker Tukes Jr.; sisters Lizzie Tukes, Rosie Lee Tukes and Betty Black; brother in law Theodore Black Sr.; daughter in law Rhonda Mills and special friend Henry Bell.

 

Gladys was employed at Crestline and Gaston Avenue Bakery.  She retired in 2000 from AMC Movie Theatre.


Gladys, also known as Gramma, Nana, Sugarfoot and Dark Knight, leaves a huge hole in the hearts of many who were always entertained by her hilarious sense of humor and infectious smile. Gladys was a conversation starter, truth teller and a keep it real kind of woman. She loved to cook, dance, going fishing, attend the Adult Day Care Center, take long walks and enjoy downtown Somerville with her two favorites Rosie and Theresa. 


She is survived by her five children who she loved dearly, Pandora Dorsey (Rodney), John Mills (Tosha), Jeanette Mills, Mandrew Mills (Amy) and Shorvon Nelson (DJ). Her grandchildren Shawnette Mills,  Nyesha Mills, John Mills, Brittney Dorsey, Simone Mills, Trezure Nelson, Ja‘Nya Mills and Tamoni Jennings. Her great grandchildren, Kaleb Smith, Imani Mills, Sincere Mills, Kaden Smith, Harmony Mills, Leith Oconefsky Jr. and Nova Boston. Brothers Eddie Brantley, Danny Brantley and Thomas Tukes. Sisters, Helen Williams (Lit), Priscilla Johnson (Sherman) Diane Thrasher, Mammie Thomas, Lillian Poole and Anitha Brantley. Sister n Law, Phyllis Tukes.  Bestfriend, Theresa Harris and extended family and friends.
