Gladys “Poochie” Thomas departed this life to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at Englewood Hospital, Englewood, NJ. Gladys “Poochie” was born the oldest of four children on June 18, 1944, to the late Augustus and Gladys Hoffler, at Kings County Hospital, New York, NY.
Gladys was raised in New Jersey and became a lifelong resident and married John W Thomas, Sr., where they raised their three children. After John and Gladys divorced, Gladys met James Kelly and they were together for over 10 years, until they both transitioned. Gladys retired with 30 years of service as a Pharmacist at Orange Memorial Hospital, Orange, NJ.
Poochie loved to travel, shop and dance, she was the life of the party. Poochie also loved going to the beach. She was an active member of the Galilee United Methodist church in Englewood, NJ and served on the Bell Choir. Gladys was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a former member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. Bergen / Passaic Chapter. She’s well known in her community and she will be missed dearly.
Gladys leaves to cherish her memory to her beloved son John W. Thomas, Jr. Daughters Sheila Thomas and Karen Hill, five grandchildren Deanne Thomas, Shevonn Thomas, Derek Thomas, Andrea Kelly and Nia Missouri and 12 Great-grandchildren, two sisters Ivy and Janet Wolfe, and abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she adored.
Gladys was predeceased by her Parents Augustus and Gladys Hoffler and Brother Thomas Hoffler.
Due to the COVID-19 federal restrictions of public gatherings, a memorial will be planned at a later date. Per Gladys’s request, we will keep family and friends informed future arrangements on her Celebration of Life Memorial.
