Iva Eaton Obituary

A Live Stream will be available at the time of the service below.

Iva R. Eaton was born in Ebony, VA to the late Martin Luther Harrison and Henrietta Ellis Harrison on December 4, 1932.   Iva was the youngest of five children.

Iva was formally educated in the Baltimore Public Schools and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 1950.  She continued her education at Morgan State College and Middlesex County College.

Iva met the love of her life Vernon Eaton and were married in holy matrimony.  They made their home in East Orange, NJ and were blessed with two children Melray and Toi.

Iva began her career as a payroll clerk at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD and in 1964 she relocated to New Jersey where she continued her career at New Jersey Bell as a telephone operator.  For more than 20+ years Iva worked faithfully with the Middlesex County Board of Elections as a poll worker in South Plainfield, NJ.

Iva was a woman of faith and prayer.  She was baptized at an early age at Southern Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD.  Iva was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Metuchen, NJ and frequently visited North Stelton AME in Piscataway, NJ.

Iva’s favorite pastimes were playing cards and watching her beloved Mets, Knicks and game show, Family Feud.   Iva loved spending time with family and friends. She was famously known to make everyone around her fallout laughing from her sayings and quick-witted sharp tongue. If you don’t have an “Iva saying” then you have never laughed your heart out.   Iva was a member of the Eastern Star Silver Crown #48 in Plainfield, NJ where she held many positions including Treasurer for many years.

She was preceeded in death by her loving husband Vernon B. Eaton, her siblings Evelyn Bracey, Antoinette H. Manson, Kenneth Harrison and Barbara Pittman.

She leaves to carry her legacy daughters Melray D. Scherer (Reggie) and Toi V. Eaton, grandchildren Terek Stokes and Terreka Butler, great granddaughters Asia Dates and Aniya Stokes.   Dedicated nieces, Mary LaVerne Harrison, Felecia Harrison and Robin Suggs (Lynada) whom she affectionately adored as “son” and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
