Jeffrey Carter Obituary

Jeffrey Arthur Carter, a husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully transitioned from this life on the morning of Wednesday, July 9, 2025, after a prolonged illness. He was 73 years old.

Born on January 19, 1952, in Harlem, New York, Jeffrey was the son of the late Gloria Thompson Carter and Jean Carter, Sr. He was lovingly raised by his grandfather, Arthur Thompson, whose influence left a lasting impression on his life.

Jeffrey’s early education was shaped by the New York City public school system, and his academic promise earned him acceptance into the prestigious Bronx High School of Science, from which he graduated. He continued his studies at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, enrolling in a Pre-Med program and playing collegiate baseball. Although a medical complication led him to step away from his studies, Jeffrey’s love for baseball endured, and he continued playing in community and workplace leagues for many years.

Professionally, Jeffrey had a distinguished career that included roles at several major corporations such as Grumman, IBM, CBS, and ITT/Western Union, where he put his electrical engineering and technological expertise to use. He spent many years with the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) of New York City, where he took great pride in being part of the team that helped design the iconic MetroCard system. After retiring from the MTA, Jeffrey continued to lend his expertise as a technology consultant, including a role with the Office of Residence Life at Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ.

Jeffrey was passionate about sports, cheering on his beloved New York team;, the Jets, Mets, Knicks, Rangers, and the WNBA Liberty. He was also an avid golfer and bowler, known for his high scores and competitive spirit. Whether he was teeing off with his golf buddies Clarence and Cleo, or racking up strikes in league play with Wayne and Ritchie, Jeffrey approached each game with enthusiasm and skill. A true gamer before the term became popular, he filled his home with cutting-edge technology, computers, and video games. He also loved playing cards, especially spades and bid whist with family and friends.

A man of faith, Jeffrey was a member of St. Mark AME Zion Church in Cliffwood, NJ. He previously served as Director of the Technology Ministry, where he spearheaded the launch of the church’s first website and established online communications for ministry staff. He was also a member of the choir and male chorus, known for his rich voice and joyful solos.

Jeffrey was equally passionate about social justice and community advocacy. As a dedicated member and later President of the NAACP Bayshore Branch, he worked tirelessly to promote equity, education, and civil rights, leaving a lasting legacy of service and leadership.

Jeffrey was predeceased by his parents, Gloria and Jean Sr.; his grandfather, Arthur Thompson; and his brother, John Carter.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 37 years, Margaree Coleman Carter of Matawan, NJ; his children: Ian Carter (Ashley) of Hazlet, NJ; Ronel Carter of Bayshore, NY; and Tenisha Carter-Sobers (Lincoln) of Fredericksburg, VA. He is also survived by his brother Jean Carter, Jr. (East Orange, NJ); sister Sandra Minton (Florida); four grandchildren: Isaiah Carter, Kyleigh Close, Nathea Carter, and Amaya Carter; goddaughters and nieces Chauna Hairston and Kendra Coleman; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.

Special thanks and heartfelt appreciation go to Jeffrey’s lifelong friends: Sam & Vera Darby, Keith & Lynette Rushmore, Anthony Ligon, Roland Jackson, Frank & Michelle Hampton, James & Alicia McLeod, Cleo & Brenda Northington, and Clarence & Millie Garland.

The family also wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Arnold Walter Nursing & Rehabilitation, DaVita Holmdel Dialysis Center, and Arbor Terrace Senior Living Community.

Jeffrey Arthur Carter lived a life of service, intellect, and joy. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
