Jessie Douglas Obituary

Jessie Evelyn Douglas was born in Summertown, Georgia and she was the sixth of nine children born to the union of the late Joseph & Jessie Mae Bynes. She departed this life on August 24th, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded by family and close friends.

Evelyn began her initial relationship with the Lord at an early age, at St. Galilee Baptist Church in Summertown. She later relocated to New Jersey and became a member of Traveler’s Fellowship Baptist Church, now The Well Church, in Piscataway, where she served in many capacities as well as Mother of the church. She was a living vessel of the spirit of God.

Evelyn spent all of her youth in Swainsboro, Georgia. Attending Summertown Elementary & Emmanuel County High School. She later relocated to New Jersey, where she met the love of her life.

Evelyn was united in Holy matrimony to Edward Douglas in Newark, New Jersey on April 7th, 1956. To this Union, they were blessed with four children and in 1961 they made their home in Piscataway, NJ.

Even as a full-time homemaker, Evelyn found time to volunteer as a Cub Scout & Girl Scout leader. She was active in her children’s extracurricular activities. For many years, she worked at Westinghouse on the assembly line. She later became a beloved crossing guard for Piscataway Township. She crossed 100s of kids, and this helped solidify her as a staple in the community.

Evelyn loved music, especially Al Green & Jackie Wilson, her family and her friends. She was also an avid bowler, participating in two leagues at one time. In her roles as daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt & friend, she watched over the neighborhood and was like a mother to any youth that traveled down Brookside Road.

In addition to Evelyn’s mother and father, Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband Edward; two sisters, Geraldine & Ernestine; & her two brothers Joseph & Hubert. She leaves to cherish her memories, two sons, Jerome Bynes of Swainsboro, GA; Fredrick Douglas (Dessie) of Antioch, CA; & two daughters, Teresa Douglas & Cynthia Douglas of Piscataway, NJ; one godson, Lenny Myers (Martha) of Wharton, NJ; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by four brothers Curtis Bynes (Elaine, deceased) of Piscataway, NJ; Carl Bynes (Sarah) of Tyrone, GA; Horace Bynes (Hattie) of Richmond, CA & Lavern Bynes (Damita) of Bartow, GA. As well as the countless number of nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.
