John Brokaw Obituary

John Stephen (Steve) Brokaw was born on August 12, 1949, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  While holding his wife’s hand, he departed from his earthly life on Saturday, March 19, 2022.  Steve was the son of Louise and the late John (Honey) Brokaw. He was the second of five children born from this union.

Steve graduated from New Brunswick High School, class of 1967.  He was a lifelong resident of New Brunswick.  Steve worked at the United States Postal Service for 15 years. He went on to become a member of Local Labor Union 156 as a laborer and retired in September 2007.

He was a loving and devoted husband to Sandy (Washington) Brokaw, who affectionately called him Stevie. They were united in holy matrimony on March 3, 1995. He was a wonderful step-father to Erica and Shawn Hamilton, and proud “Pop-Pop” to Sayon Lembrick Jr. and Noah Hamilton.

Aside from his family Steve’s greatest love was sports.During high school he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. After high school he took off for Wiley College in Texas, where he was expected to play on their football team but missing New Brunswick he quickly returned home. He transferred to Delaware State College but that did not feel right either so after a semester he returned to New Brunswick. While he did not have a college athletic career, he combined his athletic skills and knowledge with his love for kids and coached both local Pop Warner teams as well as St. Peter’s High School football teams as an assistant. Like his father and brothers Steve was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching all types of sporting events.  He loved taking long car rides with his wife, watching cowboy movies, and cooking on the grill.

Steve was predeceased by his father John (Honey) Brokaw. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife of twenty-seven years, Sandy; step-daughter, Erica Hamilton; step-son, Shawn Hamilton; two grandchildren, Sayon Lembrick Jr. and Noah Hamilton; his mother, Louise Brokaw of South Brunswick, NJ; two sisters Patricia Brokaw of North Brunswick, NJ, and Jacqueline Brokaw-Richardson (Lawrence) of Chicago, Illinois; two brothers Gary Brokaw (Renee) of Heathrow, Florida, and Glenn Brokaw (Diane) of South Brunswick, NJ; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
