Lata Shirguppi was born to Deorao and Mandakini Karajgikar on April 23, 1961, in Solapur, India, the youngest of seven children. While working part-time and caring for her niece she received her master’s in psychology from Pune University. In 1986, she came to the United States where she met and married Shrinivas. They always had a loving supportive relationship and settled in New Jersey for the rest of their married lives. Soon thereafter they had two children - Renu and Tejas. She continued to fulfill all her roles as a dutiful daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, and friend to all. She worked sincerely throughout her life while continuing to care for those she loved.
In 2017 she began her battle with three different types of cancers as well as a stroke, but never gave up hope. She persevered throughout as she was determined to get better so she could continue to be there for her family. She always put her family first and was the center of their world. Unfortunately, on the morning of February 5, 2024, she succumbed to her illness and passed peacefully in her sleep at home.
Above all else, her faith in God never wavered. Through all the adversity she faced, she continued to practice her faith - reading religious texts, listening to hymns, performing rituals, and maintaining fasts. Up until her final days, the clearest words she could express were “Shree Swami Samarth.”
She will be remembered for her selfless, loving, beautiful, resilient, and pious spirit. As the days go by her memory grows stronger and her legacy lives on forever. The way she lived her life serves as an example for us all - help those in need, smile through the toughest of times, and never give up hope.
You meant so much to so many people and have touched all of our lives indelibly… We love you always and forever … Lata, Latee, Neha, Atya, Mavashi, Mami, Aai, Mommy …
