Leslie & Daniel Blocker

Leslie Marie Blocker, tenderly known as Leslie or Les, was born July 4, 1969, to the late Mary and John Lionel Sylvain in Mansura, Louisiana. She departed this life on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, in Rapids Regional Medical Center in Alexandria Louisiana.

She graduated from Marksville High and later attended Job Corp where she received her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. She met Daniel Blocker at the tender age of 19, married him at the age of 23 and traveled abroad with him for several years. While living in Fort Dix, NJ, Leslie worked several years as a Nursing Assistant at the Masonic Home in Burlington, NJ. While living in Warner Robins, Georgia, she began a career at Walmart, diligently working her way up to a management position in the Vision Center. Some of her favorite pastimes with family and friends included a good game of Spades or poker, and taking a quick trip to the Atlantic City casinos. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, who she would travel across the country to be with. She was affectionately known to them as “Granny”. She was also a diehard Whitney Houston fan, and held several personal concerts for her family at home, not just in the shower. Although she was small she had a humongous personality, with an infectious and bright smile to match. She could talk to anyone, and left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.

Leslie was predeceased by both parents and two brothers, Jacque and Timothy Sylvain. She leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Angel Blocker of Manassas, VA; Achantee (James) Powell of Owings Mills, MD; Amber Blocker (James Sneddon) of Denver, CO; one son, Daniel Blocker Jr. of Warner Robins, GA; one sister, Lisa (James) Harbor of Alexandria, LA; one brother, Latharie (Na’Keisha) Sylvain of Alexandria, LA; six grandchildren, Isaiah, Jason, Osiris, Elijah, Grace and Luke; one special niece, Jalisa Harbor; mother-in-law, Bessie Gladys Blocker of North Brunswick NJ; five sisters-in-law, Linda (Charles) Williams of North Brunswick NJ, Tracy (Robin) Dozier of Riverside CA, Marilyn of Charlotte NC, Vera of Jacksonville NC, and Janice of Cranbury NJ, and a host of relatives and friends.

Daniel Blocker, lovingly known as “Danny” or “Block”, was born January 20, 1959, at Middlesex General Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ to Bessie Gladys (Coleman) and the late Deacon Willie Blocker Sr. He departed this life late Thursday evening December 31, 2020, in Rapids Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, LA.

Danny was baptized at an early age by the late Rev. Dr. Charlie H. Brown, Jr. at the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens and was a member of the Youth and Young Adult choirs. He attended Franklin Township public schools; he attended two years as a part-time student at Somerset County Vo-Tech for Auto Mechanics and graduated from Franklin High School where he played the tuba in the concert and marching bands.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force February 24, 1981 and served over 25 years on active duty. He traveled across the world, stationed at George AFB (Victorville, CA), Clark AFB (Luzon Island, Philippines), England AFB (Alexandria, LA), Lakenheath AFB (England), Cannon AFB (Clovis, NM), Lackland AFB (San Antonio, TX), McGuire AFB & Fort Dix Army Base (Wrightstown, NJ), and Robins, AFB (Warner Robins, GA), where he completed his career. He also completed various short deployments as an aircraft mechanic, a deployment to Saudi Arabia, and did a short tour at Osan U.S. AFB in South Korea.

Early on in his career, he was recognized by the Air Force for his vocal talents, participating in a quartet-singing group at his first duty station in California. He was highly decorated and received many awards and badges to include the following: Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal (3 times), Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Readiness Medal (2 times), Korean Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (2 times). 

Danny’s favorite pastimes with family and friends included playing various competitive games, some of his favorites being Spades, Bid Whist, and Dominoes. He considered himself as a professional spades player, and nicknamed himself a “spade-ologist”. He also enjoyed watching professional football, as a long-term and committed Giants fan. Music was such a joy of his. It was a regular occurrence to catch him enjoying the sounds of Stevie Wonder, his favorite artist. He shared his love for Stevie by introducing his music to family, making more fans. He made a point to go above and beyond for his children, grandchildren, and all of his family. For his beloved daughters, he was their handyman, auto mechanic, and personal driver; traveling across the country twice. Once he traveled to Illinois from New Jersey, and another time from Georgia to Colorado, just to help two of them move. He was committed to watching football with his only son and junior, and spending quality time with his only granddaughter in the local area, Grace. He was known to all his grandchildren as “Pop-Pop”. He truly showed his love in action. With his beloved nieces and nephews, he also developed close relationships, intentionally stepping up as a father-figure when they needed him. He was the epitome of a selfless provider and would give his last to those that needed it.

He was predeceased by his father and three brothers, Willie Jr., Alan and Eric Blocker. He leaves to cherish his memories: three daughters, Angel Blocker of Manassas, VA; Achantee (James) Powell of Owings Mills, MD; Amber Blocker (James Sneddon) of Denver, CO; one son, Daniel Blocker Jr. of Warner Robins, GA; six grandchildren, Isaiah, Jason, Osiris, Elijah, Grace and Luke; his mother, Deaconess Emeritus Bessie Gladys Blocker of North Brunswick NJ; two sisters, Linda (Charles) Williams of North Brunswick NJ, Tracy (Robin) Dozier of Riverside CA, a loving Aunt Alyce Thomas of Plainfield NJ; God-sister Shirley Spruill of Somerset NJ, God-brothers, Kevin (Linda) Coleman of Ewing NJ and Cornelius Gray of Tampa FL, four sisters-in-law Marilyn of Charlotte NC, Vera of Jacksonville, NC, Janice of Cranbury NJ, and Lisa (James) Harbor of Alexandria, LA; brother-in-law, Latharie (Na’Keisha) Sylvain of Alexandria, LA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Daddy was a true example of what a father should be. He always provided, supported, and loved us unconditionally. Even as adults he was always there for us no questions asked. I will continue to celebrate the amazing dad you were. Love you to the moon and back ❤❤� Angel

Daddy, thank you for being not only an amazing daddy to me, but a Father-figure to so many in our family. You had such a genuine personality and gentle spirit that left a lasting impression on anyone he came in contact with. Thank you for being such an amazing provider, and for going above and beyond for our family. They don’t make them like you anymore, and I thank God that he made you my dad. Mommy, I am beyond thankful for the positive impact, support and love you gave to me for 34 of my 37 years. Thank you for being there during most of the times when I needed you the most, for always being available to share some of your amazing recipes, much needed and REAL womanly advice, and never ending encouragement. We may not have always agreed on everything but I thank God for all the things you taught me, and for the woman you helped me to become. Mommy & Daddy. 30+ years together and left this world within the same week. I don't know if I believe in heaven but I hope y'all are up there hanging out with your siblings and parents, shaking hands with MLK, and dancing at a Whitney Houston Concert. Love You forever, Amber
