Our beloved Lester Jones was called to eternal rest on the evening of April 12, 2021 at Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro, New Jersey.  Lester leaves a legacy of being a devoted brother, husband, father, and friend, a shining example of a deeply principled man full of lessons grounded in truth for so many. He was 87.

The youngest of five siblings, Lester was born on August 5, 1933 in Addis, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana to the late Robert and Nellie Jones.  Lester completed his early education in the West Baton Rouge Parish School System and later worked in New Orleans.

In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was a Korean War veteran who proudly served his country overseas in Korea and Japan, and stateside in Massachusetts as a B-52 mechanic specialist with the 348th Bomb Squadron of the Strategic Air Command. In 1957, Lester transferred to the Air Force Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1961. During that time, he was recognized for his distinguished service and awarded the National Defense, Korean, and United Nations Service medals.

While stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Springfield, Mass., his final active-duty assignment, he met the love of his life, Sadie Louise Johnson. In 1957, he moved to Newark, New Jersey and was baptized at The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, where he became a member.  Lester and Sadie wed on October 11, 1958 and remained happily married for 62 years until he made his peaceful transition home. They moved to Piscataway, NJ where they raised their son, Randolph Jones, and resided there for 53 years.

Lester was a proud and hardworking man. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years of dedicated service and later worked as a truck driver for Metroplex and Ryder trucking companies.  He became a member of Fountain Baptist Church in Summit, NJ.  His final retirement was in October 2006, after the birth of his only grandchild, Sage.  His joy was found spending time with his granddaughter, building in the backyard, and being a voracious reader and student of American History.

Lester joins his dearly departed parents and older siblings, Randolph Jones, Myrdes (Jones) Sims, and Lillian (Jones) Hite.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Sadie; his son, Randy, daughter-in-law Sundaa, and granddaughter Sage. Also left to mourn his memory are his brother William ‘B.B.’ Jones and sister-in law Marjorie of Baton Rouge, La.; as well as nephews Billy Sims and his wife Wanda; David Jones and his wife Dana; and Archie Jones, of Baton Rouge, La.; Leroy ‘June’ Hite and Michael Hite, both of New Orleans; Curtis Johnson and his wife Tonya, Kenneth Johnson, and Michael Smith, all from New Jersey; his nieces Vicki Jones Jennings and Gloria Jones from Baton Rouge, La.; Nellie ‘Marie’ Hite, Joann Simmons, Monica Simmons and Ellen Hite, all from New Orleans; Shirelle Kemp of Starkville, Miss., Anna Marie Smith of Pensacola, Fla. and a host of grand and great grand nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors, and loved ones.

He will be missed. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
