Lorraine Marian Brookin went home to be with the Lord on January 9, 2023. She was born in Newark, New Jersey on August 24, 1931. She was the daughter of John and Bertha Stiles.
Lorraine attended school in Newark and graduated from South Side High School, Newark New Jersey. She graduated from the Nursing School of Martland Medical Hospital in Newark, and she went on to begin her career as a licensed practical nurse (LPN). She was a dedicated nurse for 38 years. During this time, she demonstrated the highest dedication in her position as a nurse and to her patients; she was acknowledged through numerous citations for her outstanding work ethics. In 1993, she retired from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark New Jersey.
Lorraine was fun loving and had a kind spirit. Her motto, “I don’t discuss money, politics, and religion.” She was a very giving and generous person to family and friends. She was addressed always by the family as ‘Aunt Chittee’ Of course, we never knew how and why she was call ‘Chittee.’
She enjoyed traveling with family and friends. Over the years she enjoyed cruising with her niece, Lorraine, and her husband, William to Alaska, Hawaii, Caribbean, and so many other places of interest. Lorraine was an independent woman, and when necessary, she didn’t mind traveling alone. She was a wonderful aunt to her namesake, Lorraine McLeod. Lorraine would do anything for her niece who would refer to her aunt and mother-in-law as the ‘Queens.’
When Lorraine wasn’t traveling, she was enjoying a Woman’s Retreat sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, Somerset, NJ or at an on/off Broadway play at a theatre in New York with her sister (Doris) and niece (Lorraine); and afterwards, Lorraine would enjoy a meal at a great restaurant. When asked if the food was good, she would always say “excellente” in any language.’ She enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest!
Lorraine was an active member of St. James AME Church, Newark New Jersey until she moved to Flemington, New Jersey in 2012 where she would reside with her niece, Lorraine, and her husband William. In September 2022, she moved with her niece to Villa Rica, Georgia.
Lorraine is predeceased in death by her mother, Bertha Stiles, father, John Stiles Sr., brother, John Stiles Jr., and sister, Doris Mae Edler. She leaves to cherish her memory, her niece, Lorraine McLeod and her husband, William; nephew, Dorian Edler; great-niece, Jocelyn Edler, great-nephew, Jonathan Scott, and a host of family and friends.
Lovingly submitted,
