Michael Glenn (Rodgers) Robinson affectionately known as “Skip”, who is a descendant of Prince Rodgers, was born on March 19, 1958, to Judith Rodgers and Russell Johnson in Somerville, NJ.
He spent his early childhood in Hobbstown (Bridgewater) before moving in 1966 to Southside Ave (Somerville). Skip received his education through the Somerville School system, was an accomplished champion wrestler, and graduated from SHS in 1977.
Following high school, he was employed by Egan Machinery in Bridgewater, received his Diesel Mechanic’s Certification and also worked at Midas Muffler for many years. Skips main profession was an entrepreneur, he was a “Jack of all Trades.” He was a Master Mechanic, Barber, Handyman, Landscaper, and General Contractor, to name a few.
In 1978, Skip became a father to his firstborn son, Michael. In 1981, he married his high school sweetheart, Marlene Thompson and to that union, Mylyn, Mylea, Baby Mason, and Mason were born.
He spent his childhood years as a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Hobbstown where he served on the Usher Board and was a member of The Junior Church. In 2005, Skip joined HOPE Church in Bound Brook, and was a member of the Men’s Fellowship Ministry.
Skip cherished his family, especially his children and grandchildren who lovingly called him “Pop Pop.” He was an awesome caregiver to his Special Needs grandson MJ.
He was a member of the APA Pool League and well known by many as a “Pool Shark.” Skip enjoyed coaching his son’s football and baseball teams, fishing and playing chess. He especially loved Boxing, with his favorites being Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. He was also a dedicated Steelers fan. When asked what his favorite color was he always responded “Money Green!”
Growing up Skip had a faithful companion, his dog “Poncho” who was always by his side. When you saw Skip, Poncho wasn’t far behind. Everyone knew Poncho in the community.
Skip had many close friends throughout his life. His closest friends to date were Charles Davidson, Bobby Johnson, Lloyd Fisher and his Uncle/Brother Johnny Hobbs.
Michael Glenn (Rodgers) Robinson was predeceased by his mother, Judith Rodgers Robinson, his father, Russell Johnson; son, (Baby) Mason Robinson; grandmothers, Victoria Hobbs, Blanche Johnson and Gertrude Robinson; brothers-in-law, David Jennings and Arthur Morrison, Jr.
He is survived by his father, Howard Robinson(Judy), who gave him his name and raised him from the age of 3. His siblings: Scarlett Moore (Donald), Laurie Morrison Van Ness (Phillip), Dawn Jennings, Karen Crews, Horst Johnson (Regina), Christopher Gordon, Carla Moore, Eric Murdock, Natalie Howard (Wayne), Carmen Wiliams, Brenda Williams, Howie Robinson, Tamara McGill, Erika McGill, Arnold Robinson, Maurice Jones, and Jazmyn Robinson.
A host of nieces and nephews are left to cherish the memories of their beloved “Uncle Skipper” along with aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Skip’s legacy will live on through his four children, Michael McCleod, Mylyn Robinson(Portia), Mylea Evans(Jay), and Mason Robinson; 10 grandchildren: Brittany, Nicholas, Michaela, Arianna, Makhia, Maura, Anthony, Mylyn Jr., McQuis and Majesty; four great-grandchildren: Marilyn, Monroe, Jaxson, and Nouriel.
Skip had a big heart and didn’t hesitate to help anyone in need, especially his family and friends. His bright smile, sense of humor, hearty laugh, hardworking nature, and servant’s heart made him a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
