Obituary

RUTH ANNA (nee HOBBS) SCHENCK DAWN: February 23, 1934 DUSK: February 25, 2023 Born February 23rd, 1934, Ruth Anna Hobbs was the first child born to Charles & Valerie Hobbs, in Somerville, N.J. Soon after, the family moved to Bridgewater (Hobbstown), where the family grew in number to 14 children. As a youngster, Ruth was always fascinated with the newborn siblings as they came along. She was an enthusiastic helper to her mother with the little ones. Ruth attended the Green Knoll Elementary School in Bridgewater and went on to attend and graduate from Somerville High School. She so enjoyed learning and passing on knowledge to others. As a member of Shiloh Pentecostal Church, the Evangelical Fellowship Chapel, and Maranatha Baptist Fellowhship, she sang beautiful sacred music as choir member and soloist. The fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 were characteristic of her with everyone she knew, as well as new acquaintances. Ruth Anna Schenck had quite a variety of occupational pursuits. In her teens she was employed as a domestic. During her married years she volunteered at Somerset Medical Center as a nurses' aide. During the years her children were in school, she was a teachers' aide as well as playground attendant. Ruth was well known and respected throughout the region, and when employed at Somerville High School as the Truency Officer, she was conscientious in getting to know well not only parents and grandparents of students, but also some students' extended family members. Ruth had a special love for helping people in whatever way she could and this personal virtue is a jewel in her eternal crown. Ruth also kept her capable hands busy as a Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aide caring for the elderly and infirm. Ruth married an excellent man by the name of Stewart. They met at church. As a youngster, Stew at a mere six years of age realized little Ruthie was the one for him. He was a “townie”and she a “country girl.” She was not impressed with little Stewart for a long time though, as the town kids regularly made light of the country kids. Nonetheless, the little candle lit in Stew's six-year-old heart only grew ever brighter and stronger on into adulthood. Shortly after his graduation from Kutztown State Tecaher's College in Pennsylvania, Ruth and Stew courted, were engaged and got married on October 5, 1958, to the absolute delight of Ruth's beloved grandmother Pastor Ruth Brown, who always had approved of Stewart even as a young person. Their now 64 years old domicile on Brown Street in Somerville is a visible testament to godly love, commitment and faithfulness to God's institution of marriage. Seven children were born of their marriage: Stewart, Damon, Robin, Lance, Allene (deceased October 22, 2022), Ian, and Brent. Ruth and Stew are graced with eight grandchildren. Ruth will be greatly missed by her remaining brothers, sisters and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and hundreds of friends. Our mother Ruth daily kept the wholesome Christian music and Bible teaching programs of WFME Family Radio and Pillar of Fire Radio permeating the home, fostering a perpetual clean Christian atmosphere all our lives. In the early years, the house-hold greeting of “Praise the Lord” was heard every time we entered or answered the door to welcome Christian friends and family. Ruth was diligent in her Christian faith, a dedicated disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the 1970's, Mom led a number of neighborhood children to faith in Christ through her Bible Club which met a couple times a month in her home, after school. In the later years of her life, Ruth's chief concern was that she held true to the Word of God so as not to let her own thoughts and feelings dissuade her from the Truth. We expect fully that when she passed over into eternity, our Father in heaven smiled and said, Well Done, Thou Good and Faithful Servant. Enter Thou Into the Joy of the Lord. - Amen.
