Ruth Estelle (Johnson) Wilson was born on April 20, 1943 in McKenney, VA; and transitioned on August 30, 2023. She was born to the late Daisy Johnson-Fisher and David Fisher (Ray W. Hicks, Sr., Biological).
Ruth graduated from Southside High School, Dinwiddie, VA (1961) and married her high school sweetheart, Melvin W. Wilson on February 29, 1964 (59 Years). To their union were born: Stacey D. Wilson-Nicholson of Scotch Plains, NJ; Dorri B. Wilson of Scotch Plains, NJ; Melvin D. Wilson (Deceased); and Marvin W. (Milena) Wilson of South Plainfield, NJ.
Ruth was employed at the Newark Airport as a waitress; and also worked at Bell Labs as well as Ortho Pharmaceutical. For over 43 years, she was a Child Care Provider. Ruth’s favorite job was being a mother, homemaker and a housewife.
Ruth was baptized at First Baptist Church in McKenney, VA where at a young age she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in her life. Upon moving to New Jersey, she and her husband joined Hopewell Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. After relocating to Scotch Plains, the family moved their church home to St. John’s Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 45 years. Under the leadership of Dr. Rev. Kelmo C. Porter, Jr., Ruth sang in the gospel choir, served as an Usher and was appointed as a Deaconess. Ruth’s favorite mission was sending holiday, birthday, condolence, and get well cards to her church family.
Ruth enjoyed cooking. She was an amazing cook and baker, and was best known for her potato salad in addition to her many cakes and pies of which sweet potato was her specialty. Ruth also enjoyed being a High School Band Mom; and she loved to watch football – her favorite team was The NY Giants.
Ruth had seven siblings: Roberta (Larry)Wilkins of McKenney, VA; Kevin (Lavonya) McWillie of Grand Rapids, MI; Brenda (Edward) Jones of Petersburg, VA; Mary Reese (Bernell) of Glen Dale, MD; Connie Spindle of North Chesterfield, VA; Ray W. Hicks, Jr. of Macon, GA; and Ophelia (Ralph) Goodwyn of Macon, GA; Brother-In-Law Calvin V. (Helen) Wilson of Zebulon, NC; and Sister-In-Law Doris Wilson of Edison, NJ. She was predeceased by her Sister-In-Law Regina W. (Thomas) Hudson.
Ruth was blessed with six grandchildren: Corry (Michelle) Faulk; Tamara Hankins; Carlaya Jones; Ryan Nicholson; Talia (Jake) Carlon; and Timothy Wilson. She was additionally blessed with two great granddaughters: Amelia Faulk and Jerchelle George.
Ruth will be missed by her beloved husband, children, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
