On the beautiful Spring day of March 20, 1940, in Key West, Florida, a beautiful baby girl was born to the late William (Bill) Butler and Floriette Butler. They named her Shirley Glorina Butler. She was the second of three children born to this union.
Shirley spent her childhood and young adulthood in Key West graduating from Frederick Douglass High School in 1958. She met and fell in love with her high school sweetheart Kermit “Thanny” Saunders. Shirley and Thanny married on September 27, 1958 and shared a 64 year union until his death in 2022. This union of love produced three loving daughters, Deidra, Cassandra and Cheri.
After relocating to New Jersey in 1964, Shirley was employed by various companies, which included RCA and New Jersey Bell. She later focused on her true passion, which was caring for children. Shirley provided loving daycare support for over thirty years caring for over 30 children. Her leisure time was spent playing BINGO! Shirley’s love of bingo went beyond the game and served as an opportunity for her to create lasting friendships.
Shirley accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of St. John Episcopal Church in Somerville, NJ. She loved her Priest and her church family. She showed love and kindness to all who knew her.
Beyond her faith, her family and bingo, Shirley also loved “The Price Is Right”, the game show network and watching football. Her forever favorite team was the New York Giants!
Sunday, February 18, 2024 Shirley answered the call to Glory from God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother William Butler, Jr and a son in law Bernard Stewart.
Those left to cherish her memories include her children; Deidra (Ray) Britt, Cassandra Stewart, Cheri (William) Fox, grandchildren: Antonio Saunders, Cheyenne Britt, Sheneice Fox and Jasmine Fox, great grandson; Antonio Saunders, Sister; Barbara (Theodore) Dickerson, nephew; Rodger Robinson, nieces; Chanel (Michael) James and Lisa (Kenneth) Brooks and a host of cousins other relatives and dear friends.
