Vicki Leigh Settles was born in Omaha, Nebraska on 29 December 1947 and spent the first year of her life in the Lincoln State Orphanage. Adopted by Bernice and Howard Settles, she grew up in Muncie, Indiana where she cultivated a love for sports and youth counseling. Active in Southside High School extra-curricular activities, she played in the school band and was a varsity cheerleader. Having garnered a Water Safety Instructor certificate, she worked summers as a youth camp lifeguard.
Vicki earned a Bachelors in Science Degree from Ball State University in Elementary Education and was a model K-6 school teacher for 39 years in the Plainfield, New Jersey school system. A staunch advocate for fellow teachers, Vicki served as a Union Negotiator for the Plainfield Education Association and served a brief jail sentence in 1978 with her negotiating team fighting the School Board for a progressive teachers' contract. She loved teaching our children and often lamented that principals routinely assigned the most troubled students to her due to her excellence in achieving success with students that had been left behind by coworkers.
A love of the Lord, worshiping at First Baptist Lincoln Gardens, and love for family filled her life with unending joy. In spite of a decade of challenging health issues which took Vicki from us on 1 June 2021, Vicki's faith remained strong and she loved her family to the end.
She is survived by her brother Brian Settles (Phyllis Ann) of Griffin, GA, nephews Amiri Settles (Shreni Zinzuwadia), of South Orange, NJ, Dalles Maxwell (Maddisen), of Somerset, NJ, Zachary Wright of New Brunswick, NJ as well as 5 grand-nephews and 1 grand-niece.
