Victoria Naa Betty Thompson or Mum Betty in her father's house, Sis Betty affectionately by family and friends, and Mommy by her loving children, departed this Earth on her 76th birthday.
Mommy was born in Accra, Ghana to John Thompson and Madame Beatrice Golightly. After coming to America in 1972, she raised 5 children and later divorced. George, Liza, Alana, Edlyn and Edward were raised with a strong sense of family and humor. They were the joy of her life. She was a wonderful cook and baker and showed her love for those around her by making delicious meals with spicy conversation. Her greatest love was rearing her children and providing childcare for the children in the community where she resided. She got her gentle touch from her aunt's midwifery background, her powerful personality from growing up boxing in her father's house, and her strong belief system from her mother and grandmother.
Mommy will always be remembered for her delightful singing voice, infectious laugh, radiant smile, and fiery personality. She made an impression on all those she met and fiercely protected those she loved. Some of her favorite sayings include: "This is your mother," "Caw caw," "In this world…", "Ah, LIFE!," and a host of other flavorful curse phrases in both Ga and English - she was that talented!
Mommy is survived by her 5 children: George (Tobi), Liza (Former Spouse Derek), Alana (Michael), Edlyn, Edward (Shaun) and 4 grandchildren: Malachi, Leilani, Toni, and Avalo. She is also survived by a host of relatives who cared deeply for her and respected her wishes until the end of her life.
The family will have a private service in honor of her memory. Contributions can be sent via Zelle to VBTCOL76@gmail.com.
