Washington Simpson Styles, Sr. of Somerset, NJ departed this life on December 2, 2020 at the age of 102. Washington was born on December 17, 1917 in Madison Georgia to Isaiah and Eva Styles.
Washington, affectionately known as WS, was raised in Madison, GA where he attended school and graduated high school. In 1944, he joined the US Navy where he served in World War II on the USS Eldorodo. His ranking was a Stewart's Mate Second Class Officer. For serving our country he received the American Area Camp Medal, Asiatic Pacific Camp Medal & 2 Stars and the Victory Medal to name a few. He served until 1946 then receiving an Honorable Discharge. Washington loved sharing his wartime stories with everyone. Washington relocated to Jamesburg, NJ in 1955. He was employed for the Construction Laborers Union for more than 30 Years before his retirement. Washington was no stranger to hard work and was also employed for Red & Black Auto Parts until retiring from there at age 86.
Washington was a faithful member of St. Johns Baptist Church for many years serving as a Trustee and Sunday School Teacher. After relocating to Somerset in 1989 he eventually became a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Washington was a diehard Mets Baseball fan and would even give the players nicknames. He was a gentle giant that loved his grandchildren and would often ask "how many do I have now?" He loved to hunt, fish and garden. He also loved his extended family in Madison, GA and would often visit.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Isaiah and Eva Styles, Lillie Styles, Daughter; Connie Gordon and Grandson; Charles Johnson, Sr.
He leaves to cherish his memory: Seven daughters; Vera (David) Johnson of Decatur, GA, Patricia Kinston of Somerset, Denise Styles of Somerset, Janet (Andrew) Thomas of Somerset, Victoria Styles of North Brunswick, Kay Styles of Princeton and Wendy (Ricardo) LaFortune of Somerset. Six sons; Freddie Styles of Atlanta, GA, Washington (Paula) Styles of East Brunswick, Gerald Styles of Somerset, Ray (Elise) Styles of Allentown, PA, Tracy (Michelle) of Piscataway and Corey (Patricia) Styles of North Brunswick. He was also a proud Grandfather with 40 Grandchildren, 47 Great grandchildren and 7 Great - Great Grandchildren. A host of cousins and friends.
