Wilhelmina Gumbs Obituary

With profound sadness yet deep gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Wilhelmina Gumbs, a trailblazer, dedicated public servant, and unwavering pillar of her community. She departed this life at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of strength, service, and love.

Born on July 18, 1935, to William Brown and Louise Lincoln, Wilhelmina grew up with a passion for education and leadership. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1955 and further pursued her studies in Business School.

On November 1, 1958, she married the love of her life, George Gumbs, with whom she built a beautiful life until his passing on February 14, 2013. Together, they raised two children, Wanda and Wendell, who, along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, were the heart of her world.

A Life of Leadership and Service

A woman ahead of her time, Wilhelmina shattered barriers as the first woman to sit on the board of an international marketing company. Her leadership extended into her beloved Aberdeen, New Jersey, where she passionately served her community. She was elected as a Councilwoman and honored to serve as Deputy Mayor. In addition, she dedicated two terms as President of the Concerned Citizens of Aberdeen, championing the needs of local residents.

Her passion for service reached beyond politics—she was a devoted member of St. Mark Church, where she chaired Women’s Day and served as President of "The Dependables," raising funds to support church initiatives. Later, she became an integral part of Cathedral International in Perth Amboy, where she coordinated the Soup Kitchen for 13 years, ensuring those in need were fed and cared for. Upon stepping down, she was elevated as a "Mother" by Bishop Hilliard and the Cathedral church.

Beyond her church and public service, Wilhelmina played an active role on the Library Board, Zoning Board, and Planning Board, continuously working to improve the lives of those around her.

A New Chapter in Florida

Even after relocating to Florida, Wilhelmina remained a beacon of leadership and community engagement. At GrandVilla, she became President of the Resident Council, started a Wednesday Bible Study, organized activities, called Bingo, and worked in the community store—always finding ways to serve and uplift those around her.

A Legacy of Love

Wilhelmina's  greatest joy was her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her daughter Wanda Sims (Jimmy), son Wendell Gumbs (Rose), and adopted son Rodney Snells. She was a proud grandmother to Kian Gumbs, Jamiel Sims (Digna), Brianna, Kyla, Nyla, and Davida (Sherman), and a cherished great-grandmother to Kennedy, Caden, Aiden, Jaden, and Zoe. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren (Lynn Pennyfeather, & Richard (JoJo) Smith & Monteque Hughes, and countless dear friends who will forever treasure her wisdom, warmth, and unwavering kindness. She was predeceased by sisters Emily Bryant, Alice Norton Smith & Brother William Greene. She is survived by sister Ollie Brown & sister in law Gert Greene.

A Life Well Lived

Wilhelmina was a woman of resilience, faith, and boundless generosity. She believed in lifting others up, leading with grace, and always giving back. Her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Rest in peace, Mother. Your love, leadership, and legacy will never be forgotten.
